NAUTICAL CRAFTS :  Vintage Glass Fishing Floats

Date:  Sept 19, 2021

------------------------------

This summer has seen a number of vintage glass fishing floats come our way. These are being crafted with knotwork netting in antique, hemp, tarred marline. The line is from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

A catalogue is being created in our gallery to view each float, its information tag, and tags are numbered and signed by the crafting artist. What ever known history is available for each float type series is being tagged to the items. Most floats are approximately 5 inches, but there are smaller and larger float options.  The largest vintage glass floats aquired this summer are 12 inches.

The dark amber, button top series has 19 floats.  The "Duraglas" clear floats and Northwestern Glass floats have registration or patent marks that help to date them (circa 1941 and 1947).  These 3 float types were acquired from a fishing family who used them in the Bay of Fundy, off Yarmouth, NS, in the fishing industry between 1930-1950's.

In addition to these floats, other blown glass floats have been acquired from PEI, Alma, & Lunenburg to add to the collections.  The largest floats are 9 inches (from fishing farms) and 12 inches (from tuna long lines).

This summer, various floats have been featured in retail shops, markets, and gallery shops in New Brunswick.  As floats sell, they are marked as such in the online catalogue for historic use by collectors.

Some glass blown balls have also joined the mix from newer sources, and are tagged as "Decorative Glass Floats", as they have not been used in the fishing industry, and are intended more for decorative use. A variety of colours and sizes are available.  All floats are being suitably tagged with an information card.
